After about 8 miles we connected with the Paul Bunyan bike path that runs from Bemidji through Walker then down to Brainerd. It was peaceful being away from cars.
We then stopped for coffee in Walker. Walker is an amazing little town. For a Tuesday morning I was shocked at how busy it was. We met some great folks at the coffee shop who encouraged us and even made a donation to our ride!
Powered up with Java we hit the road. Driving around Leech Lake was incredible. The traffic was a little crazy but we didn't die so we aren't complaining. It is hard to articulate the joy in riding through such scenery and even pictures don't do it justice, but here is a try.
Earlier in the morning someone had warned us about rain... and sure enough, it was brewing just south of us. Our goal was 108 miles which would put us in Floodwood but it became obvious we would not make it.
We made it to Hill City about 30 miles from Floodwood and started asking people with pickups if we could catch a ride to Floodwood! Within 15 minutes Wayne and Mitch agreed to add 60 miles to their day! They wanted $20 which was even more amazing (we gave them more). It was a fun ride discussing farming. About halfway there it started to rain!
A little kindness goes a long way! Would you sponsored a mike for $12? You can donate here easily and safely.
